Q: Could someone please explain to me, how the engine/transmission is set up in an Audi R8 (or any other mid engine, awd car)? Where is the tranny located, how does it send power to all 4 wheels? Does it have a different transmission than an RS4? My friend and I were discussing this, and I am at a complete loss... Any help is appreciated, and links would be great!

A: It has the same engine and transmission as the Audi RS4. And the same AWD system except that the AWD in the RS4 sends 60% of the power to the rear wheels and 40% to the front, while the Audi R8 sends 80% of the power to the rear wheels and 20% to the front to give it more RWD characteristics. The Engine in Midengined cars are located right behind the front seats. The transmission is located in between the front seats. It is the same as front engine cars except it is flipped around. The transmission is always located under the gear shift. The Audi RS4 is heavier and not as aerodynamic so it is a little slower. 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph, but can go 186mph. Audi R8: 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. Top speed is 187mph. The Audi R8 handles better because the engine is in the middle so it has better weight distribution. And it is lower so it has a better center of gravity, which also helps with handling. And it is lighter, which also helps with handling. That is why the Audi R8 is so much more expensive.
