Q: wondering if my TL, noone makes turbo or twin turbos for it, could get a custom turbo or twin made for it? And if so what's it likely to cost? I've got the extra cash from a lawsuit to do it. Love my car and jus want to make it faster. Already have i/h/e done so far

A: Xavier, Not sure if my earlier post was to your question re a turbocharger option for the TL. I wrote that there is no such beast, only a supercharger kit from CT-Engineering that makes a modest 4 - 5 psi tops. Anything can be done with enough money. There are Honda/Acura performance shops that will do a full build on a Honda J32A3 motor (what's in the '04 TL). However, you'd invest a boatload of money getting it right to the place where it will support a custom built turbocharger. Even if you could get more than 8 or so psi from this engine, here's some real world problems you'd face in getting adequate results: 1. If your car's got an automatic transmission, a high boost arrangement will likely bring it to an early death. 2. If your car's one of the few that has a manual 6 speed, you'll be better off, but you'll find that the clutch will slip. The transmission was not built to handle gobs of extra power. Note: Honda (Acura) uses FEA (Finite Element Analysis) in their design process that enables them to only slightly over-engineer their product...it's got a buffer for added stress beyond what's 'stock', but not a lot. Honda/Acura engineers cars the way Boeing engineers airplanes...BTW, this is not a bad thing. 3. No matter what transmission you have, you'll have wicked torque-steer. Acura uses a VSA feature that limits power delivery in accordance with wheel slip & uneven power distribution. If you turn it off while trying to handle a launch with 400+ hp, you'll be wrestling with the steering wheel...struggling to keep the TL from angling into the curb. 4. If you can overcome all of the above, a TL with so much hp will only experience a modest improvement in its 0-60 launch times. Overpowered FWD designs can be terribly inefficient in linear acceleration from a 'dig'. Example: A stock TL Type S with a manual tranny should be neck & neck in acceleration with the IS350 (automatic transmission/rear wheel drive) due to the IS's losses through the torque converter...but the TL is still a good 1/2 second slower...FWD inefficiencies. Personally, if you've got to have more performance, I'd go with the supercharger kit, add a Greddy Evo2 stage 3 exhaust, add race engine mounts plus a couple other ooh-ahs, and be happy with the 340 flywheel hp you'll be making. Just my opinion (I drive an '06, tuned TL).
