98 CL keeps burning up alternator?

Q: I have a acura 2.3 and I need to know what could cause the alternator to burn up within a minute of relpacing it. A mechanic did some work on it three weeks ago [new belts] and it hasn't been right since.

A: I own a shop, and think you have something going to ground doing this. Check your email, and you will see my thoughts on resolving the issue. I don't see how changing the belts would have any effect on the alternator, or cause this. What could have taken place is; if they used a long pry bar, and somehow damaged one of the wiring harnesses by prying on it, but they shouldn't have had a need to pry on anything. If the vehicle has ever been in an accident, then it may have a mashed wiring harness that is shorting to ground somewhere. The test should find any shorts. Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
